Take Your Basement from Dungeon to Designer!

Is your basement a place you’re afraid to step foot? Is it that one section of your house that’s “off limits” to all visitors? It may be time to consider a basement remodel. Your basement doesn’t have to remain a dungeon that only gets used for storage, laundry, and tornado scares. You could transform this currently wasted space into a liveable area or fun hangout spot! Finishing your basement will not only extend your living space but also increase your return on investment, should you decide to sell your house in the future.

Here are eight basement transformation ideas to consider for your remodeling project. Depending on the size and layout of your basement, you may be able to incorporate several throughout your space.

Home Gym

Create a weight room or open space where you can do home workouts right in your basement. Basements are typically cooler than upper levels of the home, making them ideal places for home gyms. Consider adding rubberized flooring, full-length wall mirrors, and storage compartments.

Play Area for the Kids

Create a fun, colorful space where your kids will love spending time during the day or after school. Consider adding carpet or rugs for the main play area so the kids stay safe and warm. Add extra lighting to make this space bright and welcoming, and consider installing extra storage compartments or cabinetry to keep things organized.

Office Area

Moving your home office to the basement is a good way to declutter your main living space. It can also help you create separation between work and home, making your free time upstairs more relaxing.

Extra Bedroom

If you want to add an extra bedroom in the basement, you'll need to add a finished closet, an egress window, and adequate ceiling clearance. It's best to work with a professional to make sure you adhere to all building codes and requirements. Consider adding a bathroom to pair with the new bedroom so your guest or family member can get ready and take care of business without having to go all the way upstairs.

Theater Room

Turn the natural dimmness of your basement to your advantage with a theater room! Bring in the comfy furniture, surround sound system, and large screen TV!

Game Room

Consider transforming your basement into a space where you can entertain guests and spend quality time with your family. Add a table where you can play board games and cards and cabinetry for extra storage. Spice it up with a pool, ping pong, air hockey, or foosball table and extra seating.

Music Room

If you have musicians in the family, a music room may be the perfect solution for that currently unused lower level of your home. You or the kids can practice instruments or jam with friends in the basement—without making everyone else throughout the house lose their sanity. Soundproof your space to buffer the noise.

Bar

Consider adding the bar or wine cellar you’ve always dreamed of. If you want a wet bar, know that it could get pricy if you don’t already having the proper plumbing in place. Add a sink, a fridge, the bar itself, bar stools, a TV, and a little personality, and enjoy your quiet, relaxing, personal bar without having to leave the house.
